What guided questioning actually looks like

Not a transcript of an answer being handed over. Every turn below is a question, until the learner gets there themselves.

  2. Misa asks: What do you get if you add one half and one half?

  3. Learner: One.

  4. Misa asks: That was quick. Why was that one easy?

  6. Misa asks: So what would you need to change before adding a half and a third?

  7. Learner: Oh — make the bottoms match first.

The answer was never given. It was arrived at — which is why it survives the next unfamiliar problem.

Who this is for

AI Socratic Learning is built for students and the families supporting them. The situation it is designed for is a familiar one: at the kitchen table on a school night, where the pressure is to produce an answer rather than to understand one.

The response most tools offer is to supply that answer faster. This one does the opposite — it asks a student the question that makes the next step thinkable, and waits.

What a session actually looks like

It opens with a question rather than an explanation. Typically something like: What part of this already makes sense to you?

Whatever comes back, the follow-up is chosen to test the reasoning rather than the recall — for example, What would have to be true for your answer to be wrong? The point is not to catch anyone out. It is to find the exact edge of what is understood, because that edge is where learning is possible.

Where it usually helps

The recurring problem across fractions, reading comprehension, essay structure and scientific reasoning is the same: fluency arrives before understanding, and looks identical from the outside.

The tell is a student who can finish the problem but cannot say why the method works. A correct answer says very little on its own. A question answered with reasoning says a great deal.

What good progress looks like

Progress here is not measured in completed items. The signal to watch for is simpler: the student starts asking their own next question before being prompted.

That is what this is for — confidence that survives the next unfamiliar problem.
